My crazy friends Katherine Bongard and Melissa Miller strike again! The two of them have had a long-running Pirates of the Caribbean RPG going together, most notably involving Captain Jack Sparrow and a plethora of characters they created for that universe. Their own personas are "Cutthroat Ket" and "Malicious Mal". They surprised me by announcing they had a spot reserved for me in their pirate world -- "Ravenous Rae"!
While I know nothing about pirates or the 1700s as such, it's always fun to play with Mel and Kat. They handed me the deeds to the character, so to speak, and let me run with it. I'm currently working on Rae's background and other details while trying to learn about the time period in question. It's important to note, by the way, that the ladies' storylines essentially have two versions -- the pirate era and the modern era. All the same characters from the pirate world are usually involved, only as "modern-day" versions of themselves. Oh the insanity!For the time being, I only have two main characters created for this particular universe (plus their modern representations). Many thanks to Kat and Mel for inviting me to join in on their fun -- and also for coming up with such a clever name for the character. "Ravenous" is my favorite movie! SNEAKY.
FULL NAME: Raena "Ravenous Rae" Devereaux. (Pronounced RAY-nah DEV-uh-ro.)
NATIONALITY: French.OCCUPATION: In both eras, Rae is known as the Brothel Madam of France. I.e., she is essentially a female pimp and runs an elite, exclusive, high-class whorehouse, rather appropriately called "La Chatte".AGE: 25HEIGHT: 5'8"WEIGHT: 125 lbs.HAIR: Pirate Rae -- Light brown, thick, and curly. Shaggy and flippy in the back, with longer curls framing her face. Fairly short cut, approximately jaw-length. She parts it on the right side and lets the thicker curls fall over her left eye. A large flower is usually present on the right, just above her ear.Modern Rae -- Same hairstyle, but dyed a very bright orange with pale, peachy blond streaks mixed in.EYES: Blue.PIERCINGS: Pirate Rae -- Once through each earlobe. Usually wears very rich and ornate dangly earrings.
Modern Rae -- Bellybutton, both nipples, labret, tongue, both earlobes (twice), and a monroe on the left side. Prefers silver jewellery.STYLE: Pirate Rae -- In the pirate era, Rae is part of the upper echelons of society thanks to her flourishing business as well as her roots. She dresses in exquisite gowns, wraps, coats, lace-up ladies' boots, and occasionally a stylish hat for outings. Her clothes are made of the finest materials and are painstakingly detailed with beads, lace, feathers, and real jewels. She typically wears a corset in public with ample cleavage on display, has a painted-on beauty spot on her right cheek, and seems to have a fondness for billowy or ruffled sleeves. Accessories include parasols, small oriental fans, gorgeous flowers in her hair, and jewellery galore. She also lovingly totes around her seal-point Siamese cat, Minou, just about everywhere she goes.
Modern Rae -- Though Rae's modern self is a bit spicier than the pirate-era version, she still maintains a certain elegance about her. Her wardrobe is very feminine, sleek, and sexy provocative, yet refined. Everything she wears tends to have a hint of flirtation to it. She accessorizes with classy jewellery, strappy shoes or high boots, and loves to wear dresses, skirts, and long coats. Minou the Siamese cat is also present in this timeline.PERSONALITY: Feisty, sly, very crafty, and ambitious. Rae is too intelligent and independent to settle for "being a lady" and effortlessly live off her family's wealth she would rather go out and experience the world and do things on her own terms. She refuses to be told what to do or who to be and will brazenly defy "polite society" at every turn, consequences be damned. She loves money but prefers success, enjoys her notoriety and makes no excuses for her behavior, is fun-loving, wild without being stupid, and highly motivated to obtain the things she wants. She is hated and scorned by some, respected and admired by others. In the end, she is usually the one who has the last laugh.REFERENCE IMAGES:
Serzh could be thought of as Rae's love interest for the story - though really he's more of a combination of her man-meat, friend, and teacher. They share an unconventional sort of romantic partnership that seems to work for them.
FULL NAME: Serzh Torsten. (Pronounced SAIRsh TORE-shtain. The "zh" at the end of Serzh is technically a soft "j" sound, but is best described as a "sh".)
NATIONALITY: Middle-European - possibly German or Austrian, judging by his accent. He has never revealed his official origins.OCCUPATION: Pirate Serzh -- Pirate.Modern Serzh -- Bounty hunter for the highest bidder.AGE: 33HEIGHT: 6'4"WEIGHT: 180 lbs.HAIR: Pirate Serzh -- Rich brown, darker below and lighter towards the top. Short in back, longer above, brushed forward so that it hangs over his forehead and eyes. Thick, mostly straight, and perpetually tousled from the wind. He sports bristly, dark sideburns that reach down to the lobes of his ears and then curve upwards slightly, pointing towards the corners of his mouth.
Modern Serzh -- In the modern era, Serzh has a short, bristly mohawk, nearly black in color. The sides of his head are shaved to a fine grayish stubble, leaving only a narrow strip at the top of his skull, with the hair trimmed down to about half an inch. His face has a bit of a 5-o'clock shadow most of the time.EYES: Clear blue.PIERCINGS: One solid ring through each earlobe.STYLE: Pirate Serzh -- Simple, functional, and yet dignified. While at sea, he usually settles for whatever wardrobe he can work in and keep remotely clean - plain shirts, trousers, boots, belts. On land, he dresses more elegantly, thanks in no small part to his lucrative career of thievery and plundering. In polite society he is most often seen in decent (but still rather simple) shirts and breeches, heavy coats with long coat-tails, a thick sash around his waist, sturdy boots, belts, gloves, and often a smaller sash around his neck, knotted and sometimes decorated with a stick-pin. He typically carries his weapons (swords, pistols, other knives) on him wherever he goes.
Modern Serzh -- Again, he keeps his wardrobe very simple, comfortable, and functional, but stylish. He likes nice shirts and trousers, leather coats, solid shoes or steel-toed boots, dark colors, and generally has a sleek, streamlined appearance. Often, he can be seen topping the whole ensemble with color-tinted sunglasses. He nearly always carries his modern weapons on him as well (guns, small blades, handcuffs and other restraints), though he keeps them more carefully hidden.PERSONALITY: Serzh comes across as almost robotic in his demeanor. He seems very cold, unfeeling, and businesslike at a first glance. In reality, he can be very kind, funny, charming, and loyal when he wants to be, but most people can't get enough information or time out of him to be able to find out. He is extremely quiet, solitary, and maddeningly secretive, even to those "closest" to him. While this (not to mention his nomadic nature) tends to cause unrest in his personal relationships, it seems to suit his choices of career rather well, and has helped him to become somewhat notorious in each of his trades. He is highly intelligent, methodical, crafty, and resourceful - the kind of guy who gets the job done and never leaves a trace behind. His careers and his thirst for adventure remain his true "loves", on the surface... but the lovely Raena, whose challenging abrasiveness is oddly bewitching to him, seems to be doing a fine job of keeping his wild ways harnessed for now.REFERENCE IMAGES:
