In late August of 2005, my cousin, Lisa Haines, was tragically killed in a car accident while driving home from work. She was 35 years old and 7 months' pregnant with a little girl, who was unfortunately lost as well.Lisa was a wonderful and caring person, cherished by one and all. She left behind her loving husband of two years, Jason Haines, and their one-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Leah.During the week of the funeral, I decided to put together a little book for Leah -- meant to help Jason explain to her someday where her mother has gone. She's still a bit young for that yet, but he has his own copy to safekeep until he feels the time is right. The book was designed as a children's story, with illustrations, poem-verse, and pretty/girly colors. I enlisted the help of my dear friend Brianne Goetz (formerly Dahlin -- she just got married!) to digitally color the illustrated pages for the polished, sparkly, cheerful feel I wanted it to have. This project wouldn't have been possible without her kindness and enormous talent! Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Brianne!Once the pages were complete, I added the text I'd composed, designed front and back covers, left white margins for spiral book-binding, printed everything out on glossy photo paper, and brought the whole stack to Kwik Kopy for binding and laminating. (Props to Kwik Kopy! They do excellent -- and speedy! -- work!)I originally had one copy each made for myself, for Jason and Leah, and for John and Gerry (Lisa's parents -- my uncle and aunt). I then returned to make another for my parents, one for Brianne (so she could see how wonderfully her hard work turned out), and for Scott and Sonia (Lisa's brother and his wife). It was meant to be a personal family thing. But then it sort of took a life of its own, because the recipients were showing their copies to everybody! Now people I don't even know are asking to see this "famous book" they've heard so much about! ;DAnd so, I figured it was time to post it on my website. ;) It really belongs among my favorite works of 2005-2006 anyway.Click here to flip through the book page-by-page! ---> |
